LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

/ MEETING OP THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of tho Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. There were present: Tho Mayor (Sir. E. P. B.ishworth), and Councillors A. Hobbs, W. M'Dougall, S. G. Clendon, A. West, W. G. Meldrum, .T. Brasell, W. Walton, W. Kerr, W. ton.Constable Holmes wrote, staling that th.o matter of dazzling headlights on motor-cars would receive attention. A letter was received from the superintendent and secretary of tiio Methodist Sunday School, drawing attention to Sunday trading in the borough, and asking whether in tho .interests of the young people, this could not bo prevented. The Mayor explained that Sunday trading came within the provisions of the Police Offences Act, and it was decided to inform the writer that the council could do nothing in the' matter. Messrs. Gawith and Lognn wrote, asking that caveat he withdrawn from the certificate of title of a- property to which a drainage loan had been granted, and which had now been paid off. The application was granted. In referenco to the ownership of land by Natives in the borough, 11. Te I'nng-'i wrote, offering to go thoroughly into ll'e matter, and furnish a correct list of the names of owners which would enable the council to seciiro payment of rates for a. sum of .£2O. This offer was accepted. A letter was received from the iiinister of Internal Affairs, stating that Cabinet had decided that for the present no action would be taken in the matter of internment of enemy aliens as requested by the Gisborne Borough Council. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs wrote, asking whether any monuments or other edifices had been erected in the district in honour of French citizens, travellers, sailors, soldiers, or other persons of mark. Tho matter was referred to tho Town Clerk for attention.
