In the July issue of the Government "Abstract of Statistics" there is some valuable information regarding tho bee industry, giving comparative tables showing the position iii 1806, 1911, and 1916. In 1906 there were in the Dominion 15,398 households which kept bees, the number of hives being 74, : ii1. In 1911 tho number of beekeeping households fell away to 11,011, and the number of hives to 71,605. Five years later the number of hives had shrunk to 57,540, and the number of households keeping bees to 5244. Notwithstanding tho lesser number of hives in 1916 compared with 1906, the honey produced two years ago exceeded that of 1906 by 359,4011b., whilst the production of ivax was only 6501b. less, the figures being 31,(!821b. and 81,032 lb. The colonies in 1916 were classified as follows:—Black, 23,436; hybrid, 17,240; Italian,' 12,684; other or undefined, 3980; total, 07,540.
