MAGISTRATE'S COURT

ALLEGED THEFT OP MOTOR-CAli. A smart-looking young man named Jack Johnston, -who was arrested by Detective Torrance and Plain-clothes Constable Burnett in Wellington on Sunday night, was arraigned before Mr. W. G. Riddel], S.M., at the Magistrate's Court yesterday on a charge of having committed the theft.of a motor-car valued at .£125. The car was 6tated to be the property of Newton King, and was alleged to hnvo been stolen at Hawera on July 1 last. Chief-Detective Boddam asked for a' remand in order that tho accused might appear at Hawera on August 10. The remand was agreed to. The theft of lib. of sausages, valued at 2s. (Id., the property of Arthur Preston, was a charge preferred against Walter James Turner, who pleaded guilty to the offence. It appeared that Turner, who was stated to bo a hawker, took the sausages on Saturday from a van proceeding to Preston's shop. A fine of 205., with costs 55., in default seven days' imprisonment, was imposed. Herbert Maloney, who appeared in Court with a nose very much the worse for treatment of an obviously severo nature, pleaded guilty to drunkenness and to breakiug tho conditions of his prohibition order. Inspector Marsack stated that the order had very nearly run out when defendant was . found drunk with two bottles of beer in. his pockets. Maloney was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, but was fined <lOs., in default seven days' imprisonment, to the breach of the prohibition order. Tor insobriety Daniel Keane was fined •10s., in default seven days' imprisonment; George Harley 205., or in the. alternative seven days' doteniion; and John Curran 10s., iu default 21 hours' imprisonment. Thomas Owens was fined 405., in default seven days' imprisonment, for having cast offensive matter in a public place, namely, Haining Street. On informations of having disobeyed the terms of maintenance orders, Duncan M'Nnb was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to ba suspended so long as defendant pays ,£1 per week off the arrears, ,£7G 75.; and Donald Campbell, .Reginald John Downing, and Richard Ulingworth wero each ordered to bo sent to prison for a month. In tho cases of Downing and Ulingworth tho warrants for imprisonment were ordered to bo suspended so long as the defendants paid .El per week olf tho arrears, which amounted to .£5 aud XI 10s. respectively. The arrears in Campbell's caso wero set down at ~C3 2s. On tho application of his wife, Ivy Orlowsiki, Pruncis Orlowski was ordered to pay 7s. lid. per week in respect of tho maintenance of each of his two children. Mr. A. W. Blair appeared for Mrs. Orlowski and Mr. I'. W. Jackson for defendant.
