THIRTY CASES HEARD SOME RETURNED SOLDIERS APPEAL Tho First Wellington Military Service Board sat in Wellington yesterday to a list of thirty appeals. Mr. D. G. A. is chairman oi the board, and the other members are Messrs. 1). M'Laren and W. Perry, An appeal by John M'Clow, motorman, which had been heard previously, was dismissed, with leave till October. William Noad, steward at the Wellington Club,' was transferred to Class D of the Second Division.. Leave till November was given Ernest Mark Minifie, corporation custodian at Lyall Bay, who wished to complete some business arrangements. , Two of appellant's brothers went to the front with the Main Body and two others, also, are .at the front. One has been killed. An appeal for Norman George Johnsen, grocer, Creswick, was dismissed. Two months' extension of leave was granted Private Leslie Wootton, who 6tnted that his father had met with an accident and needed assistance on his farm. • Indefinite leavo was recommended for Private J. 1. tiodsell, a returned soldiei, whose ground for request was that he was an only surviving son.. Two brothers had been killed in action. >
Private Joseph S. a returned eoldier, asked for discharge. He said he was the only support of a widowed mother, as his father died while ho was on active service. Tho board would make no recommendation.
Six months' extension of leavo was asked for by Kenneth 1). Gundry, a returned soldier, who has one brother serving in_ the Imperial Army and another going into camp on Thursday. No re-, commendation was decided on.
Frederick William Donaldson, motorman, asked for exemption on the ground that he was controlling his lato father's estate in the interest of his mother and other relatives. He said that he had four brothers, three of whom were at the front. Decision was reserved.
Samuel Ernest Addwinkle, clerk, who appealed on the ground of hardship, sought leave till December. Leave till November was agreed to. Charles F/attery-Donoghue, who stated that he was doing light work on the waterside, asked. for exemption on account of the state, of his wife's health. Ho said that he had been in camp and had been rejected as unfit for service. Hearing of the case was adjourned to the next sittings of the board. Charles Thomas Phare, cabinetmaker, Petotic, was allowed leave till December. The appeal by Thomas James Harvey, clerk, Hataitai, was investigated and adjourned. Leave till September was given Charles Thomas Keatch, bricklayer's labourer. An adjournment till October was mads in the case of George W. Eiby, clerk, who appealed for family reasons. An appeal by Walter William Andrews, driver, was partly heard and adjourned tilj Thursday. Leave till October • was allowed John Ihonipson, scutcher, Koputaroa, but an appeal for exemption was dismissed. Adjournments till next sittings of the board were made in the cases of Alfred S. Slack, carpenter, R. A. Metcalfe, traviSF' i railway foreman. ahe Tioard ■ will sit again this morning.
