TRAGEDY AT NEW BRITAIN. Sydney, August 12. • Tho Island steamer reports the mnrdoi of two whito traders on one of tho outlying islands of tho New Britain group The victims wero surrounded by hordes 1 of savages and butchered to death, their bodies being cooked and eaten. The natives concerned showing further hostilities, a punitivo expedition was dispatched, and surprised a -well-aimed foroe of natives at Kokopo. A desperate encounter resulted in sixty natives boing 6hot and others taken prisoner. Tho expedition visited a second villago and punished tho murdorere—Press Assn.
