TUTANEKAI TO BE SOLD. A statement was made by tho Eon. '11.I 1 . M. Wilford (Minister of Marine) at Auckland on Thursday, in regard to the rro posed disposal of the<Tutanckni. Tho vessel, he said, is 22 years old, and cost £37,000. She -was built as .i cable ship, and had been used by the Post Office Department as a, cable repair ship up till qiiito recently. The Post Office Department was now handing her back to tho Marine Department, ae she was no longer required by the former Department. Tho srbstantial rent that was being paid for her' by the Post Office had now ceased, and the Marine Department had tho boat on their hands. Offers for her had linen received from Dunedin, Auckland, and ■Wellington, and it seemed to him the only way to do was to dispose of her by tender. (Cliis it had been decided to do. Mo pointed out that it would cost thousands of pounds to convert her into a cargo ehip, a fact which would no doubt, bo taken into consideration.
Reports received from Weetport and Oreymouth yesterday said that there were prospects of Bomc of the barbound steamers sailing Iqbl night. The Kakapo, from Westport, and the Karamu and Kokiri, were expected to sail lnet night, whilo the Kamo and Ngakuta were doubtful.
Arriving from Lyttclton this inojning the Mana will load and sail to-night for Wanga,nui. Bringing , a general and produce cargo the Ngaloro is due here on Sunday from Bluff, Timaru, and Lyttclton. The vessel will sail on Monday for Greymouth. The Mapourilia arrived at Auckland at 4 a.m. yesterday, and is to leave again to-night. By tho last English mail news .was received in Sydney that the wpllknown Norwegian ship Haln, when on a- voyage from Buonoß Aires to Bergen, Norway, -with a cargo of grain, met v/itli a hurricano which' completely dismasted According to the master, Captain M. Erichscn. thft vessel with 'hor crew of 18, left Buenos Aires for Bergen on December 28, 1916, and all went well until about 50 deg. N. lat. and 26 deg. W. long., when they found themselves in the tooth of a terriflo hurricane. That was on March 3, and Ihe hurricane continued violently through the night, flooding tho ship and smash' ing up her gear. Tlie next day the vessel had a heavy list, and the rigging had to be cut away. Tho men were without food or fresh wfltcr. but they stood ly courageously until at last a- ship was sighted and a boat with 10 men left the sinking ship to board her. The boat on "Ctting alongside the veseel was smashed to pieces by tho heavy seas, but the men got on board all right. A boat was sent off from the liner, and this brought off Captain Enchsen and the "tot his crew. Thie boat shared a Bimilar fate, but again the men were got on hoard. To put an end to the drifting derelict a shot aas put through her low, and sho went down rapidly. During her earner the Ilala. made many voyages to AustrVlia, both for coal and wheat leading.
