PUBLIC NOTICES. T> E FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF ■ FOURTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE WAR, THE WAR. THE EESOLUTION WITH GOD LEFT OUT AND THE RESOLUTION AS AMENDED AT TIMARU. ■In tho columns of this journal on S? das >, Au S" st 2 > under the heading, Fourth Anniversary of the War," it was pointed out. that in the Resolution :to be submitted at tho public meetings of citizens, convened for Monday last, August 5, at the.request of tho Government, there was no mention whatever of, or reference to, God, and of : our dependence on, Him. Human effort and aid alone apparently were relied upon to bring about a successful termination of tho present war. ,IN CONTRAST 'to this tho very different attitude adopted by. President Lincoln (whose actions and example; in. Iho time 'of the great Civil War in America were mentioned with approval, and as. beirigwhat-we should follow, in the letter sent but by our Acting-Prime Minister) was set, out. at eomo length; the very, words used by President Lincoln in various Proclamations being given 'in full. And what grand Proclamations they were; devoutly recognising the Supreme Authority and just government of Almigiity God in all the affairs of men and of nations, and of our dependence on-Him. ■. Tho President of the United States today—Woodrow Wilson—has followed theexample of his illustrious predecessor,. Lincoln, and with no uncertain sound proclaimed how fully he recognises his dependence' on—and asserts his trust in —God. Thank God for such men at the head of public aifairs; and for tho grand example set by the American ipebple in honouring God; and we may expect to eeo the Americans.signally honoured in connection with this great war, for Hβ has said: "Them that, honour Me I will honour." , WHY WAS GOD LEFT OUT IN THE DRAWING UP OF THAT RESOLUTION?. Ana, again, Why was it not amended before being submitted; or at anyratp before, being- voted .'Upon? /Surely the great mistake, made in the first instance should have been rectified. THANK GOD FOR THE FINE EXAMPLE SET AT TIMARU in this connection, where. it was- amended before being' proposed, where, by the addition of the words, "WITH THE HELP OF GOD." It read as follows:— 'That on this, the fourth anniversary, .of the. declaration of a Tjchteous war, this meeting of citizens records its inflexible determination, WITH, THE HELP OF, GOD, to to :a victorious end the .struggle in maintenance of.those, ideals of liberty and justice which (ire the common -, mid snored cause of.the. Allies." AND- IN TWR -pmnr.WAS CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY. ' TENDTni! : ' FREEZING AND COLD STORAGE.
