HON. W. H. HERRIES AT LEVIN

WELCOMED BY THE MAORIS. . (From a Correspondent.) On Munuuy artemoon last Levin was honoured with a. visit from tho Hon. Mr. Uerries, who came, in his capacity ■ of Native Minister, to make the presentation of.the Military Medal won bv her son to Mrs. Sciascia. Tho Ministerial party comprised, besides Mr. Heruies. the Hon. Heu Heu Tukino, Mr. H. l'arata, M.P.. and Mr. W. H. Field, M.P. The visitors were met by the Mayor (Mr. C. JJlonkhorn). and on arrival at the Post Office, where a. large number of Natives had gathered, a Maori haka. of welcome was characteristically given.' Mr. Kcre Nicholson spoke on behalf of ll»> Maori people, and said they wero proud that the deeds of one of their iribo were responoible for the presence of the Minister. The Hon. Heu Heu Tukino, of Taupo, whoso words wero keenly followed by tho Maoris, 6aid it gave him great pleasure to bo present on such an occasion. ■• Tho Hon. W. H. Herries said thero was no braver man in the ranks of tho Allies l ban tho Maori warrior. The deeds of the Ngatiraukawa before the pakoha came to New Zealand were, well'known. "The blood of our children has .been mingled on Galldpoli and in France." The Maori people had helped the nation, and wa were glad to hitvo their assistance.
