Sir,—May I, through your columns, draw the attention of all patriotic societies and all members thereof to the fact thai to-day in England the authorities aro allowing and encouraging the use c£ the word charity" in connection with patriotic efforts?'l would suggest that in all correspondence- between the English Red Cross and the New Zealand Red Cross Societies the New Zealandera should protest against the English Government encouraging and using the word "charity" in connection with war. efforts and war funds in any way whatever. In a "Weekly Dispatch" (Juno 1G) just to hand I read:, "George Roper will, attempt to beat his own charity concert record." If lam not mistaken, the Government have a "War Charity Committee," and license societies and per' sons to collect patriotic funds, and deliberately stigmatise it as "charity. . Fancy charity! (Do New Zealanders understand what English "charity" is?) Fancy "charity" being used in connection with our hero soldiers! I open a circular from Bomo merchants' guild or navy iengue asking for support of same as a "war. charity." Can there be "charity" ehown by a non-efficient to a relumed wounded (perhaps blinded) soldier? Read the,story of Gallipoli, and then imagine a New Zealand society asking for charitable funds to help a wounded Anzac—l am, etc., A. S. EVANS.
