AUCKLAND WINS
COPPER TRAIL CONTEST. Anyone who lins watched Iho map on the Bank of New Zealand for tho last month could not fail to have noticed that Wellington was not faring nearly so well as Auckland in raising money for tlio Red Cross "Copper Trail." According to tho trails on the man, Wellington has only reached tho vicinity of Shannon, whilst Auckland is well south , of Waiiuarino, which is within the Wellington district, 60 that as far as tho, challenge to Auckland thrown out by tho Hon. T. M. Wilford at the Town Hall a few weoks ago is concerned, the contest is over, and Wellington has been iuglorioiißly vanquished,
It would appear that Auckland won because Auckland organised. This is the day of organisation, and Mr. J. H. Cnnson, Mayor of Auckland, who took up tho. challenge, is a good organiser. In Monday's "New Zealand Herald" it wus slated that ,£1683 had been recoived from Rotorua, and other large amounts from To Puke (where a Queen Carnival was held) and Paeroa. The city contributed £2M) last week. The total amount, received in Auckland on account of the trail from Juno 4 to tho end of last week was .£46,576. Tho amount required to cover tho entire distance between Auckland and Wellington is JES3,OOO. Whilst Auckland progressed 206 miles, Wellington only covered 69 miles. This week Hamilton is making a great effort to raise ,£25,000, so that Wellington will have to hurry if it wishes to reach Marton before Auckland docs.
