Ilia Hon. ft. W. Russell returned !"rom Hamilton yesterday. The Hon. T. M. Wilford went north to Auckland yesterday. ( Mr. A. E. Glover, M.P. 'For Auckland Central, is at present in Wellington. His Majesty's Trado Commissioner (Mr. I?.. W. Dalton), who has been visiting the Pacific Islands on official business, is expected to return to New Zealand ba. fore the middle of the month. A Press Association message from Sydney announces the death of Captain John Gi'bb, a shipmaster very well known in New Zealand. The late Captain Gibb, who was over 70 years of ago, was born at Banff, north of Aberdeen, Scotland, and eerved in a number of vessels sailing out of British ports before he came out to the colonies. Hβ made several voyages between Wellington and China as master of the barquentine May, belonging to Messrs. W. and G. Tumbull and° Co., and then entered the employ of the late Captain W. B. Williams, of Wellington. He afterwards joined tho Union Company's service, and remained in it until he retired a few years ago. He was at various times in charge or the Australia, Tβ Anau, Wakatipu, Moo*akl, Monna, Niagara, and two other Union Company boats now employed as hospital ships, l'or some years Captain Gibb. who was vory popular with the 'travelling public, had been living in Sydney. Ho was unmarried. Dr Thacker, M.P., of Chrietchurch, and Captain Neville, late of the Union S.S. Company's employ, arived from Sydney by the Moeraki. Yesterday's mail brought news of the serious illness of Mr. Walter Kirby, the Melbourne tenor, formerly of Auckland. Mr. Kirby gavo a reoital here about two years ngo. - , _ ... Mr J. W. Ellis, Mayor of Hamilton, died yesterday morning (states a Press Association message). He was the nrst Mayor of the amalgamated boroughs or rrankton Junction and Hamilton.

Johannesburg, South Africa, of Mr. Kivera Allpress,_ a brilliant violinist, who was at one time well known :n New Zealand, and who resided in Sydney i'or many years. One of tho most promising of Auckland's juvenile swimmers, Tui Kronfeld, died suddenly on Friday. Tho lad, who ■wns U years of age, was champion of the Auckland Normal School, and holder of the lower school championship of tho •Vuckland Grammar School. He, was reImrded as one of the finest exoonents of i tho crawl in Auckland, and was a successful competitor at the school championships held in Wanganui Inst season,
