WELLINGTON SOUTH V WORKING MEN'S CLUB. ,
The annual match between the aboye teams was played on Monday evening in the reading room of the Working Men's Club, a hard-fought and very enjoyable contest resulting. A cordial welcome was extended to tlie visitors by Mr. 11. J. Barnes, and acknowledged by Mr. W. Berry, who made happy reference to the good work that both clubs have been doing for many years past for the advancement of chess in our midst; At ten o'clock the visitors were leading by five games to two, but the homo team mado a fino "late run" and scored tho remaining six games in the last hour. The contest thus ended in favour of the Working Men's Club by eight games to five. Tho success of Mr. Larking, a Crimean veteran, at board 13, was naturally very popular. Of tho thirteen matches played to da to the Working Men's Club has won noyen, tlie Wellington South Club has won five, and ono contest (1907) ended in a tie. . Held, 1; Nelson, 0; Larking, 1; H. Andorson, 0; total, 8. / The Wellington' Club. Tho fifth round of the Wellington Club's championship tourney resulted as follows :-W. E. Mason 1 v. Clark 0, Davis t v. Still 0, James 1 t. Lee 0, Kolling 1 r. S. Gyle 9 0, and Anderson 1 v. Ward 0. Three games are incomplete as follow:Tver holds a] slight advantage ogamst Purchas, Mackay has won two pawns from Eouliy, and Barnes is a rook to the good against Godtschalk. Jaiues, who is in capital form, also won two games previously marked incomplete by wo™? from Messrs. Barnes and Tyer. Mr. ». E M;isoi is now 1 leading with five wins and no lbeses, closely followed by Davies (•1—0), James (4-0), Godtschalk (2-0), and Barnes (£-1). . The oommittee has decided to 6end a team to play at Ngaio on Monday next, and has agreed to waive the use of clocks in the Otago v. Wellington match, which tho southern club is anxious to corn-' inence on August 31. Tn tho Otago v. Canterbury match each side has scored fiv,o points, and four unfinished games are being adjudicated on in Wellington. Southern experts predict a very closo finish.
