LINSEED OIL
BOARD OF TRADE WATCHING PRICES. For some time past Hie Hon. A. HMyers, Minister of Munitions and Supplies has been in communication with theIndian and Australian Governments, with, a view to securing supplies of linseed oil for use in New Zealand. The Director of Munitions at Melbourne advised tlia New Zealand Government that owing to requirements of the Commonwealth, the export of Biich oil manufactured in the _ Commonwealth would need to be rcstrict-vr ed, and the suggestion was made that; the distribution of linseed oil should bo controlled in New Zealand, and prices fixed by the Board of Trade. The Minister stated that the position had been somewhat eased recently, by tlio arrival of supplies direct from India, although the local demand could not be> fullv met. The shortage of shipping, however, precluded any certainty of regular supplies being received from India. As long as no complaints are made by consumers that undue profits are being made by merchants, the Government is loath to interfere, but the Board of Trade has been asked to watch the trend of prioes. and to tako the necessary control, if such should be warranted.
