THE GERMAN RETREAT
White lines in the above map show successive stages in the German retreat from the Marno salient since the Allies opened their counter-offen-sive on July 18. The line now reached is not shown in white, but approximates closely to that of the railway which is shown running east from Soissons to Reims, by way of Fismes. At 6ome points, whore they havo crossed the River Vesle, the Allies are now a short disiaucc north of this line. North-west of Montdidier the French have captured. villages on the railway connecting that place with Amiens. Further north the Germans have evacuated positions on the west bank of the Ancre, north of Albert.
