MAUIST V. THISTLE. <U Association Park on Saturday afternoon iMarist and Thistle senior 'elevens met, and' the spectators, of which there were a goodly number, wero treated to a dean, hard-fought garae. Marist kicked off with -he sun and wind behind them, and quickly invaded Hustles' goal area. From a good position Albert Lowe sent in a Lot shot, which Balhamin returned well up the Held, whore his vanguard a'cu.rod. Smith and 'J'rovithick were noticeablo in a nice rush in which Trevithick tested Hayes's Mpabiliticw. Keeping up (ho press-ire, Thistle's forwards at this stage were getting slightly the better of the play, and were awarded tivo corners in quick succession, but could not improve upon them, and Marist ultimately ckjarcd, Cnrruthora setting bis forwards going by somn clever play. Tn a. twinklinj; tlisy had invaded Thistle's goal area, Casbinan having a shot, from which a corner resulted, but tho kick-in was resultless. Play for a period hovered aboit the centre, some nico footwork by Thistle being an outstanding feature. At length Gibson (Thistle's centre forward) broke away and gavo the spectators :i taste •■!' Thistle's ability at combined play. Fairlv under way, Gibson beat Auld nicely, then passod to Smith, who in turn kicked on to Trevithick, then back to Smith, tbo latter having « goldon opportunity. over tlio bar. From the goal-kick Thistle again attacked, and i'xhvards was seen driving into goal, bu; again Hayes relieved Willi ii good kick to mid-field. Jl'arist's forwards here secured and quickly invaded Thistle's goal area, being awarded two corners, from ono of which Keilly (Maris!) made a good attempt, the ball just going over the bar. .From the gcal-lti".k lUarist came back with a rush, but Thistle's backs (lfK.en7.io being very prominent) kept them at bay, and the whistle sounded for the interval' with Marist pressing liaircl, but with honours even. The opening slages of the second spell saw Thistle making strong attacks f.n Marisl's goal, in iviiicli Edwards, Smith, and Trevithick were prjaunent, but Hayes and Carruthers beat off the attack in fine style. Jlarist then removed play to mid-field. From a piece of light play Cashman secured and made a fine dash down the line, and then passed to Bidgood, but when (ho latter was in a handy pcsil'on the. reliable H'Kenzie relieved with a (ino kick. Back came Marist with a nic'i bout of combined play, ir. which Marshall, Albert Lowe, and Bidgood were noticeable, but again M'Kenzie relieved. At 1 liit? stage Arthur Lowo had to retire owing to an old injury to hia knee. One of (he ino.-t noticeable pieces of play now ensued. Securing the ball in neutral territory, Auicl (Marist's cenirc-hnlf) sent on nicely to Cashman, who in turn saiit to Marshall, then to Bidgood, then to js. Lowe, who drew M'Kenzie, and ihon back to Harold Marshall, who sent :n a stinging shot which gave Balhamin no chanco at all. Marist, 1; Thistle, 0. Thistle's forwards at this stage, with the exception of Trevithick, seemed to tire badly, with the result that Mnrist's forwards got tho upper hand, and were continually on the offensive, tivo shots by Carruthers and Albert Lowe missing by the narrowest of margins. The game now resolved itself into a duel between the Marist.'s forwards and Thistle's backs, and every credit is due. to the latter for the manner in which they acquitted themselves. With tho sounding of tho Tvhis:le Marist left the field the winners of a hard-fought game by one goal to nil. Mr. Windley controlled the game. OTHER MATCHES. Boys' Institute Seniors (1) t. T.M.C.A. (t); Bovs' Institute Third (4) v. Johnsonville (i); Bovs' Institute Fourth A (3) v. Fourth B '(0); Boys' Institute Fifth A (;,) v. St. David's (2); Boys* Institute Fifth B (0) v. .Tohnsonville (0); Boys' Institute Fifth C (2) v. Wadestown (1); Boys' Institute Sixth A won by default from TCarori; Bovs' Institute Sixth B (1) v. Y.M.C.A. (6); Boys' Institute D (0) v. Seatoun (5); Boys' Institute Sixth E (0) v. Marist (1). Thorndon and Marist (fourth A Division) met for tho second time at Association Park on Saturday, and after a hard and willing game, in which both sides showed some fine play, the match ended in a draw, three goals all.
