MONEY MARKET. The Bank of England discount rats on January 12, 1917, was 5J per cent. On April 5 it wag reduced to 5 per cent., at which figure it has since stood. OVEN MARKET RATES. The first half-yearly meeting of the Dominion executive of the New Zealaua Kailways Engine-drivers, Firemen, ana Cleaners' Association, was held inWellington du Saturday, and will be finished to- i day. ! The executive is composed as follows:— Messrs. Henderson, president (Christchurch), M'Carley, secretary (Wellington), Kelson (Auckland), Lewis (Palmerston North), Scott- (Dunedin), Walker (Invercargill), Kobertson, Pirie, West, and Burns (Wellington). To entertain the executive the Wellington Branch of the association, on Saturday night gave a smoke concert in the social hall. A largo attendance was presided over by Mr. J, M'Lean. Hiley, General Manager of Railways; Mr. Jackson, chief mechanical engineer; and Mr. Plarson, assistant mechanical engineer. In his opening remarks Mr. M'Lean spoke of the sad fatality that befel Mr. J. V. Kelly at Waipulcurau on Thursday, and a vote of sympathy for his wife was carried in silence. , One of the objects of the evening was to present an'illuminated address to Mr. W. Wiles, who has left the service. The presentation was made on behalf of tho Wellington and Paekakariki branches' ot the association. ■ - A matter that was very strongly spolceu of was the maximum wage of Is. Sid. an hour for drivers. It was pointed out that-drivers on passenger trains, besides sometimes having the lives of persons in their care, have a most expensive ongne and carriage's, worth several thousands of pounds, in their charge. Mr. M'Lean and others who spoke on the subject said that they were not going (o press claims lor better conditions just now, but they were going to try to get. the present rate of pay increased by a half for drivers and iiremeu working after i) p.m. .
