RESERVISTS' APPEALS
YESTERDAY'S PROCEEDINGS
Tho Second Wellington Military Service Board continued its sittings in Wcll;ngtan yesterday, Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., presided, and with him wore: Messrs. I'. Curiice and Guy C. Williams. Captan Bealo was the military representative. ! Thomas F. Foley, contractor, appealed on the ground of public interest. Ho said he employed twenty man in plas-; terers' work. He supervised the- contracts taken by his firm, which at present included several largo buildings in tho city and suburbs. Alexander CtunpHell, of tho firm of Campbell and Burke, builders, was allied, aud gave evidence ' in support or Foley's stnfemcnls. Henry j Mainland, president of the Wellington Builders' Association, also gave evidence, ; and stated that there vrcro only two firms of plasterers carrying on business i in AVellington who were, employed in iho , larger kind of mercantile buildings. John ! Matthews also gave evidence. The fur- ; ther bearing of the case was adjourned until the first meeting in November. William E. Fla,ck, builder, Lyall Bay, was granted extension of leave till November G for family reasons. In support of his appeal. Charles Edward Greer, farmer, Porirna, said he was SG years of age and was married. His farm was 13 acres in extent, and was partly used as a market garden. He eaid ho had no one to assist him but his wife. He had been classed as Cl. The appeal was.-dismissed, but tho board decided to recommend that leave be granted till December i. Samuel L. Miver. farm manager, Upper Hutt, was granted leave till December i for family reasons. Tho appeal of Robert Hawes, foreman, casing factory, Gisborne, was adjourned sine die, the ground for ihe application for exemption being undue .hardship and family reasons. Ernest H. Edwards, painter and paperhanger, Wellington, applied for leave for three or four months to enable him to complete certain contracts which were taken before ho was drawn in the ballot. The -board decided to resommend leave until December 4. Undue hardship was the reason for tho appeal of Henry W. Gardner, Harbour Board employee, Kilbirnie. The board dismissed the anneal, but agreed to recommend tho appellant for non-eombat-aut service, if a vacancy offered. On behalf of J. W. M. Harrison, physical culturist, it was stated that he was nearly 4A years of age, and that for 21 yeaie he hnd been 'associated with tho treatment of certain complaints, by means of massage, electricity, etc. Not long iigo he had fixed up rooms at a. cost of ,£3OO for tho treatment of patients. The reservist had a. wife and two child--ren. The appeal was dismissed, and the board agreed to recommend leavo to December i. A mother's appeal was lodged on behalf of Harold B. Nordcll, farmer, Pahaulanui. The mother stated that there were 100 sheep and a few cattle on the farm, and she could not possibly carry on the work if her son, who was an only son, went into camp. The further hearing of 'tho case was adjourned until the first meeting of the board in November. Alec Jamss Jackson, ship's officer, Newtown, had his appeal adjourned sine die. Leave to December 4 was recommended on the appeal of George Alfred Perry, farmer, Silverstream. John A. M'Gregor, plumber, Newtown, said his business would have to be closed down if he went into camp. He could not get anyone to take his place, nor could he dispose of hia business. The further hearing of the appeal was adjourned till the first meeting of tho boaul in November. John H. Pye-Smith, warehouseman, a married man with two children, stated that ho had originally volunteered for service in Samoa and had to leavo.there because of ill-healih. The further hearing was adjourned till tho first meeting of the board in December. Undue hardship was the reason for the appeal of Charles W. Bndd, indent agent, Day's Bay, and after hearing evidence
the case was ndjonrned till the first meeting of the board in September. The appeal of Arthur W. KilniisJor, dairy farmer, Taita, was. adjourned eino die, provided appellant continued to supply milk to the city or to the military camp. Herbert Smith, shop fitter, Ucrhanipore, appealed,on tke ground of undue hardship, and after hearing evidence the appeal was adjourned sine die. Philip Greenfield, baker, Lower Unit, said ho was the only baker delivering bread in the district. Ho had Ihree employees. The appeal' Was adjourned sine die. The- board (hen adjourned the Billings until Tuesday.
