OFFICERS' KIT
AND THE. ALLOWANCES MADE. | A smart well-fitted uniform is considered by the Defence Commission to be necessary for an officer of the Espeditionary Force. In their report the Commissioners make the following remark on the subject:— "An officer of the New Zealand Ex-, i peditionary Force receives a cash allow-' j .anco of ,£25 to purchase olotliing and kit ■! before proceeding abroad. He is alsor . j allowed, for use while abroad, if avail- ! able, revolvers, binoculars, compasses, j and saddlery. His'field allowance, ac- ; cording to rank, is primarily mude to enable him to upkeep his kit, but this allowance has come to be rcgardod as j portion-of his pay. Tho matter is now being, gone iqto, to sep whether, it is j better to continue this monetary allowance or to supply a man with all he requires freo of co6t. It seems advls- . able that officers should bo smartly ", clad. For that matter, "other ranks also j should be as well fitted and equipped as • possible, as they undoubtedly are in tlio New Zealand Force. But an officer being more in evidence, a little mora care should be exercised in his case. It j 6eems advisable, therefore, that what- I over regulations are made, it shouldK& ; ■borne .in mind that it- would be falso j economy to supply him with ready-made i outer garments unless they happen to i fit exactly,, and ho should, not be in ado | to compare unfavourably l in-'appearaitcfl j with officers of other Forces."
