OPTIMISTIC REVIEW
THE PROBLEM OF THE EAST
FRICTION I .THE ENEMY'S RANKS \ r :. BRITAIN'S ECONOMIC POLICY Very little movement is disclosed on t'ne battk'front' south of the AifAl, and it is suggested that the. enemy contemplates clinging to the unfavourable line he has now reached in spite of the fact that his bridges over the Aisue—vital-links in his communications-are being bombarded with destructive effect by Allied . aircraft. The possibility ' that the enemy may revert to the defensive in Western .'Europe and'resume an aggressive policy in. the/East'.is discussed by General Maurice. Several messages indicate that 1 the spirit,of the German troops is failing under the ordeal to which they have lately been subjected. Tho Ana-, trians, who have massed strong -reinforcements in Albania, claim that they are making progress in that theatre. Answering a bombastic speech ■ by the Kaiser, Mr. Secretary Daniels states tliat no United States or British transport conveying American troops to Europe has been sunk. It is announced by Mr. Bonar Law that the Navy is sinking U-boats faster than ever. An extended report is given, of, an important speech by Mr. ■ ■ Lloyd George on Allied economic policy. He declares that tho lofiger tho ..-.war lasts the sterner will bo the economic conditions imposed 'on tho enemy countries.
