APPEALS FOR TEACHERS

MANY EXEMPTIONS GRANTED. At yesterday's sitting of the Second Wellington Military Service Board, appeals were heard from the Education Department and tho Wellington Education Board for tho exemption of many teachers on tho ground of public interest. Exemption, was granted in nearly all cases. \. . Sine dio exemption was allowed in the cases of the following teachers, on tho appeals of the Education Department:— Wiiliain Alexander Camming, head attendant, Otekaike; Henry Binstead, teacher, Auckland; Albert Murdoch, schoolmaster, Auckland; Frederick C. Brew, teacher, Jit. Eden; Samuel John lnvin, schoolmaster, Christchurch; John Ernest Purchase, teacher, St. Albaiis; Horace P. E. Godwin, head teacher, Iβ Matai; John Beck, officer in charge Special School Branch, Rona Buy; 'J'homas Frederick Chambers, assistant teacher, Sunnier; Kenneth Jl. H. Cumber, head teacher, Piipukc; Vernon Stacey, head teacher, Taemaro Native School; Edward J. Parr, science teacher, Dimedin; Frank W. Millar, assistant officer in charge, Wellington; Herbert V. Croxtnn, clerk, Brooklyn, Wellington. The Wellington Education Board, represented by the secretary (Mr. G. L. Stewart), appealed for the following reservists :—John Bringnns, teacher, Scarborough; Frederick G. Thompson, teacher, Mangatainoka; J. K. Thompson, teacher; .Charles W. Dallaston, teacher, Ohivriu; Herbert D. Prichard, teacher. Island Bay; and Edward S. HyltoD, chief clerk, Wellington. The board adjourned the casi* of the teachers sine die, and the case of Hylton until October. An appeal was made by tho Education Department on behalf of Thomas George Gilbert, clerk. Tho case hail been referred to I tiie Public' Service Commissioner, who stated that lie could supply a man to take Gilbert's place. Mr. J. Caughley, Assistant-Director of Education, said that Gilbert was an experienced mail, and it was doubtful if an efficient substitute could be provided. The, chairman of tho board (Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M.) said tho Department and the Commissioner would havo to settle the matter. The appeal would be dismissed, with leave until September 2G, when the September CI draft enters camp. v
