Veitch at tlio conferencc of the J larbours' Association yesterday, in mov- l ng the following remit from tho Wa- ] iganui Board "That this conference deplores the nnympathetic attitude of the Railway Dclartment towards harbour boards genrally, which is causing loss of national iticiency through lack of co-ordination letween harbour boards and the Railway Department. We request the Government to readjust, the jwlicy of the. tailway Department, so that it may fuli] the purposes for which this great Deiartnient of State was established— inmely, tho development of the )ominion by maintaining comploto cordinatiou between sen and land transort services." llr. Veitch declared that at tho preent time officialdom was becoming a lenace to :he Dominion, and this offiialdoni was glaringly evident in the atitude of the Railway Department to the arboui' boards. lie had no animosity awards the Railway <Department in • ringing forward the remit. Rather it •as a painful duty for him. Tlio uni'lnpnthetic attitude of the Department 'as not for the good of the Dominion, or the harbour boards had tlio greatest illiculty in dealing with the Departnent. Other members considered that the emit woahl be of more value if tlio ;ord "aggressive" was substituted for unsympathetic." Mr. Veitch agreed to lie amendment, and in this form the relit was passed.
