CHURCH AND CRAFTS

Sir,-When reading Tun Dominion this morning I' i'omid two columns by Archbishop Jiedwood painting a Blowing picture of the happy state of Labour during the Middle Ages. Wil you kindly allow me to ask him if such a state existed in those days under the guidance of the Church—and he lays great emphasis on this—why is Labour in such a terrible condition in Roman Catholic, countries to-day? There is not a vestige of what he describes remaining, but in its stead miserable wages, . poverty, wretched habitations. The bulk of the workers have nb education, and crime abounds. These facts are well known to all. Does tho fault lio with the workers, or has the Church failed in her duty?— I am, etc., DEEPLY INTERESTED.
