WAIRARAPA NOTES
The Canvassing Committee of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society visited Wellington last week, and hail n very successful canvass. An extra silver cup of (landsome design and valued at ,£ls 15s. hns been presented bv tho S. V. Neyfins and Co. Proprietary, Ltd., for best lambs for freezing purposes. Between Saturday night and Monday morning last the promises in High Street, Cartei-ton, of S. Davies and Co. were broken into, aud about twenty pairs of men's and women's boots and siloes wero takvn from the premises. Entrance was gained through a back window. Up to the present very little mortality nmongst sheep has been reported from farmers in the Maungaraki ranges. Tho past week proved a very hard one for the farmers, who had a busy time digging sheep out of the snowdrifts. Mr. Alf Johnson, overeeor to the Wairarnpa South County Council, has temporarily retired from tho position, on account of iiis services being required nt home to carry on the farm on account of hip brothers being on active service. Mr. 11. J. M'Kenzie, who recently returned from the front, has been appointed to fill Mr. Johnson's place until ho is able to return. Tho Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, accompanied by Messrs. Broderick (Surveyor-Genoral) and Ritchie (chairman Land Purchaso Board), visited the Featherston district yesterday for the pui'poso of inspecting the "Pihautea" property owned by Mr. .1. O. Bidwill under offer to tho Government for 6oldier settlement. Tho party was met at Featherston bv Mr. J. T. M. Hornsby, M.P.
