THE RED CROSS
The appeal which is to be made to the citizens of Wellington tomorrow on behalf of the Red Cross Fund deserves a very generous response. The Red Cross Society has done splendid work for our soldiers and sailors ,sincc the beginning of tlio war, and there was never greater scope for its bencficent operations than at the present moment and in the near future. Tho Red Cross is doing work which must be done and done well. Its responsibilities are constantly increasing, and it is essential that there should be a corresponding increase in tho funds at its disposal. The society's expenditure has increased from £1,691,231 in 1915 to £3,072,356 in 1917. These figures give some idea of tho vast amount of work which is being done. It's claim on our sympathy and active support is overwhelmingly strong. It is our plainest duty to give it all the help wo can. Whatever other patriotic calls there may bo upon our purses tho needs of the Red< Cross must not bo overlooked- It would bo positively shameful if any of our wounded soldiers and sailors should have to go without the attention and comforts which it is the business of the society to provide bccausc of any lack of generosity on the part of the people of Wellington. It is to bo hoped' that to-morrow's effort will be a successful onc._ The organisers deserve every credit for devoting so much timo and energy to their patriotic task. Citizens should show their appreciation by giving cheerfully and libsrally. The objoct is good, the need is great, and if the citizens of Wellington do what they ought to do tho result of "Violet Day" will be a very substantial addition 1 to the funds of the British Red Cross Socicty.
