VIOLET DAY

FOR OUR SICK AND WOUNDED. By Violet Day, which takes place> on Thursday of this week, it is hoped to raise a considerable sum of money for the benefit of our sick and -wounded soldiers through the medium of the Copper Trail. Many preparations have been made to ensure the success of the day, and it is hoped that everyone who has ttowers at all will send them in lo tho depot at Messrs. Harcourt and Co.'s Buildings, and not only flowers, but piodnce of all kinds, anything saleable, in fact. Tho day is part of the effort to bring the Wellington end of the Copper Trail to within reasonable distance of the ground covered by tho Auckland people, the latter having advanced at a great rate, leaving Wellington far in the rear. Arrangements for the free transmission of goods by rail and boat have been made, and it is hoped that th'eso facilities will bo freely availed of for the benefit of the cause. Among the attractions will be a display in the windows of the Wellington Red Cross Shop of the artistic sugar flowers made by Mr. George How, the whole process oven to the filial process in tho electric oven being shown. Several of the shops have dressed their windows most effectively in violet, in honour of the effort which is being made, arid altogether, given fine weather, Ihe day should bo an outstanding one. Soldiers and sailors alike are cared for under the aegis of tho Red Cross, and the provision of adequate hos-* pilal equipment and comforts for our soldiers and sailors must rank as 'one of the most, important tasks which falls upon those living in peace and comfort at home.
