THE FOE WITHIN
4 WHAT OF THE ALIEN AT LARGE? / CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE Tho problem of what to do with tho alien was brought before the Wellington City Council Inst night by the 'Osborne Borough Council, who suggested that tho Government should bo asked to intern all enemy aliens. Tho Mayor, in referring to the subject, said that ho could never see why aliens should be on Somes Island instead of in some place whero they could do some useful work i for ■ the -state. It seemed against common sense to keep prisoners of war in idleness. There were quite a number of works which could be done about Wellington. Councillor W. 11. I'. Barber said he ■would go further than the Mayor, lis did not see why men should be conscripted and sont to the war for ss. a day while aliens were left at large to buy the business of some of the men who went to Iho front. Councillor R. A. Wright said that it did seem that aliens were buying up businesses and farms. The question was a very live one. Councillor Ct. Frost thought that something should.be done in the matter; he felt strongly on the snbject. • Councillor L. M'Kcnzie said that they would be wiso tii remember flint tho Government here was guided by tho Imperial Government. However, lie did not rllink we had' been strict enough. Alicn-i were allowed to hold positions from ■vhich they might do harm to the country. The subject raised by the Gisborne communication was referred to the Finance Committee.
