The Applications Committee reported:— ''The roiuniilteo met on seven oeciisions since last meet ins «f the Executive ('.'oinini'tpp, and da.ilt ivilh 200 npplirations. The n'diirtion in the number of claims received is the result of the recent decision of f'jiljiiiet to increase the mnfti allowance from 30s. to ,-t'a ss. Because the Defence Denurlmeri had referred the iniilW to the iinnmil conference of (he Jii'lurned Soldiers' Association, which tool; place in Auckland in .fiine Inst, the local Press, when reporting the decision of the Government, .iscribed as due to that I'onfcience the pp.tisfactory conclusion of a lmieli-vpxed question. As a mutter of fuel, we were requested by the general secretary of the Returned Soldiers' Association, to uphold their contention that the mufti allowance should be increased, but we had been for months previously in communication with almost eveiy society in the Dominion, and had written hundreds of letters relative to this subject. As the number of returned soidicr.s increases, so also do the applications made to us by intending soldier settlers, and men desirous of establishing themselves on sundry small business ventures. Claims of this* particular natui.? require a very great amount of attention; there is also a growing tendency for other societies throughout the Dominion, as well as Australian hodira, lo request our advice on many diverse subjects, and (lie total volume of work carried out by the association is still increasing."
