ALLIES CROSS THE MARNE
SIGNS OP FURTHER RETREAT Further news of the progress of the great eounfcr-offenslve in the West was eagerly awaited last night, but very little camo through. The Allies have recrossed the Marne, and are following up their recent successes at various points. The enemy has been obliged to detach important reserves from l'rinco ftupprecht's armies, and the British have countered this by detaching equivalent forces to maintain tho balanco in the baUlo , areas. Heavy counter-attacks by the Germane were smashed by tho terrible firo from tho Allies' batteries. The whole situation, according to one correspondent, has undergono a deop transformation-at one stroke tho Allies havo regained the initiative, and can now strike when and where they please. A late cablegram from Sydney this morning explains that heavy rains are interrupting telegraphic communication and delaying the war rows. '
