WIDOWED MOTHERS

$ SEPARATION ALLOWANCES EXPLAINED. Detailed information regarding the payment of separation allowance to the widowed mother* of members of the Expeditionary Force is published in General Orders. The present rules came into force on Jlay 1:— "Widowed mothers' separation allowance of ts. 6d. a day is payable to the widowed mother who is solely or partially dependent on one son in the. New Zealand Expeditionary Force, provided he makes an allotment in her favour of not less than Ss. a day. This provision, however, may be proportionately relaxed in particular enscs, where a soldier establishes that he is unable to make such an allotment, or can only make, a smaller allotment by reason of having; to provide for the maintenance of his wife or other dependants. In this respeot each case will be,dealt with on its merits. "A widowed mother with more than one single son, whether such other son is a member of Hie Forces or otherwise, is not eligible for the allowance unless owing to (food and sufficient reasons such other son is not able to contribute adequately to her support. "Tho general principle is that the allowance is given to supplement the soraiers allotment which the widowed mother finds is in itself insufficient foT her support. 'Partial dependence' herein means any one of the following conditions:—(a) Widowed mother with no capital who earns or receives not more than 15s. a week from anv sourco -whatever; (b) widowed mother in possession of capital not exceeding ,£SOO, but no other income than interest on such capital; (c) widowed mother in receipt of income not exceeding los. a week, but who is in possession of capital not exceeding ,CSO (capital up to .CSO not to bo considered as interest-bearing); (d) widowed mother in receipt of income not exceding las. a week, but in possession of capital exceeding i!SO to be treated as receiving interest at 5 per cent, on capital in excess of

50. Such interest to bo added to income, when the two together must not amount to more than Bs. a week."
