Shipping wae brought to practically a standstill yesterday by tho. combined action of the gale and huge seas. This not only applied to Wellington, but was fairly general at West Coast ports. -The arrivals at Wellington yesterday numbered throe and tho departures three—the Pat«ena, tho Maori, and the Monowai. It was deemed advisable to postpone tho departure of the Kaitoa for Nelson until 11 o'clock last night, and then, although the Bcae had moderated considerably, tho vessel did not make an attempt, to Bail. She is timed to depart at 6 jj.ni. to-day, The Corinua, which left here at 6 n.m. on Thursday, was reported to be sheltering at Cape Campbell yesterday.' The inter-iflland steamers had both rough trips. The Maori entered the port much about her usual time, but the tierce south erly gale played with the eliip while sho was trying to berth-a feat which took two hours. The organisation of the smaller coastal vessels was completely upset, and yesterday none left the port. Tho Tainui left Wauganui laet night for Wellington, and will leave here to-day for Lyttolton. The departure of the Baden Powell for New Plymouth has been postponed until Monday. The Kennedy will now not leave here for Nelson and the Ooast until Jlondny. The Breeze has been delayed in the south, and in consequence will not arrive here until Tuesday from Lyttelton to load forjWaiieamii. MANUKA LEAVES SYDNEY. The Union Company's Manuka left Sydney at 1 p.m. on Thursday direct for Wellington, where she is due on Monday about noon. WniMEEA RELIEF FUND. The total amount disbursed by the liclicl Committee iu connection with tho Wli. mera disaster was (says an Auckland paper) £591, which sum was principally absorbed in fares and clolliinr for ihose concerned. In addition, however, a considerable sum had hern paid to sett-lew and storekeepers in the north, whose accounts had been rendered Tor goods supplied and uso of emiveyaiieee placed-at the dispofi.'il of the survivors. "[ am "lad I" note." Mr. (iuiison said, "that the recent complaints cabled from Sydney have now been qualified, and that the officials in Auckland luivo been exonerated from any suggestion of neglect. As far as Hie Edict Committee is concerned, it is only fair to stale thai 'W- r.lummig company did ovcrytliin:; in ils nower for the reception and coml'oi-l 9I 'no impeiiErr? and crew. The Town (JI-jvl; has now under ni tent-ion cases of several parties in Auckland whoa? cmt.ii instances hare i-ome to the notice of l!ic Rommillec. It is the committee's intention to reasonably render assistance even now to those whose circumstances aro necessitous ae a, result of the dieastcr. At the same time the fund subscribed locally is limited, ami the amount of £1000 donated by tHo shipping 1
company liae to meet all the claims of passengers in tile matter of fares to Australia." For special reasons the Mararoa will be dispatched for Lytteltoii at 3 p.m. to-day. Tho Iliinitaiigi will sail to-duy for Chatham Inlands, via Lyttelton. Tho Ngahere, en route from Timaru to Gisborne, will tnke in bunker coal at Wellington on Monday. Tlie Mako of the Richardson Company's fleet was due here during the night from Napier. Bhe is to sail to-day for Picton t.n load chaff for Kaßt Coust. Messrs. Johnson and 00. advise tl\at. tho Koutiiiini is due here during the week-end from Xapier, via the Coaet, nud will on Tuesday sail for Taralioho. The Ngatoro lefl Whauijarci on Tuesday afternoon for Napier and Wellington, where she is duo to-morrow. On Monday she in to sail for Wannanui and New Plvmouth. The Wootton . Bails at noon to-day for Lyttelton. At 11 a.m. to-day the Putiki iB to sail for Timaru direct. The report of the Mercantile Marine Association, which held ils Cist annual meeting at Liverpool on May 7. says:—"The transport in merchant vnsaels during the year of, 13.000.0C0 men. 25,000,000 tons of materml, 1,000.000 nick nnd wounded. 50,000,000 tons of coal and oil fuel, 2.C00.000 horses and mules, IOO.OOO.OOOewt. of wheat, 7,000,000 tons of iron ore, in addition to the export of goods to the value of £500,000.000, are concrete facts which -need no elaboration to prove the value of our senior service and tho quality of the men /who man our ships." , There arrived at Sydney on July 9 by the Sonoma an expert for the purpose of reporting on the. material available in Australia for the building of concrete ships. He is Mr. Claude L. Daly, n- renresentative of the San Francisco Shipping Company, a subsidiary concern of the Comyn, Machall Company, builders of the biggest concrete vessel afloat. If the investigation reveals a satisfactory supply of men and material, the company will commence operations. It is announced by the officials of the Commonwealth Government that arrangements are well advanced for the transport of the crow of the wrecked barque John Murray from Maiden Island. They will he picked up at the island by a Bteamer which was formorly engaged in the interstate trade, and which has been conimi?sioned to bring a cargo of paper from "owell niver, in British Columbia, to Melbourne This vessel will probably occupy about 17 days in traversing the JCOO miles between the American coast and the archipelago to which Maiden belongs. As the island is slightly nearer to Australia than to America, the crew of the stranded schooner Annie Lareen will also be brought to Melbourne by the relief ship unless the United States Government decides otherwise. - The Calm is to sail at noon to-day, taking cargo for Lyttelton, Ditnedin, Bluff, and Timaru. A notice to mnriners ieened in the Gazette states that tho steel barque Inverness, of Aberdeen, 1817 tone register, was burnt at sea, and abandoned in latitude 3ideg. 52miu. S. and longitude HSdcg. s?min. W. Ship was heading to tho N.E. with lower topsails, foresails, and lower topsails set for tho port tack, with a strong N.W. wind, hacking to westward, and gradually going down when the ship was abandoned. The mainmast was settling ,down, and swaying heavily from side to Bide. It is probable that by' this time the derelict will have drifted about 2000 milee to b.N.E. with the prevailing wind and current to somewhere to eastward of Pitcnirn Island, and may he expected in the near future to drift (n'W.N.W. nnd westward into the. neighbourhood of the Low Archipelago. It was expected at Greymouth that the Kamo would be ablo to cross the bar last night for Wellington. The Kamo had been held up for six days, and otticr vessels were effected also. The Monowai on her southern run is to leave Auckland on Wednesday for Naplo-. Wellington. Lyttolton,. and Dunedin. She will call at Wellington on Saturday next Tho Mapourilta ■.•α-rived ut Auckland yes> tcrday morning, and is to leave on the return trip to Wellington this afternoon.
