TARARU JACK SCRATCHED. (Rec. July 19, 10.15 p.m.) Melbourne, .Tuly 19. Tararu Jack has been scratched for the Australian Hurdles and Stoeplcchadc.Prcsß Assn. NOTES AND COMMENTS j TBY GMNCOE.I Tho South Canterbury Hunt Club Meeting will be held on tho Washdyke Kaceeoureo on Thursday next. Tho gathering it; attracting more- than the usual amount of attention devoted to bunt meetings, because it is held just prior to the National Meeting at Riccarton. A fiouthorn buyer has recently been ncBotiatiiig lor the purchase ot the Signalman gelding Arlington. Tho chestnut is enraged in tho Grand National Stci-nlc-cliiise, but he is an unlikely starter, and will probably bo reserved for the Enfidd Steeplechase run on ■ tho same day. The executors of the late E. W, White, a well-known New South Wales breeder, have presented tho stallion Halt King, to tho Defence Department. Halt Flag, is by Malster, from. Bed Fliff He won the premium of £50 given by the Defence Department at tho Koyal Easter Bhqw for the best thoroughbred stallion suitable for getting remounts. Locally Mr. P. S. Easton'a horses Maßter Strowan and Gang Awa , are much fancied for the two Nationals. It is many years since one owner provided both favourites for the bjg evente named, and only on one occasion hae an owner won both big events in the same year. This was in 1892, when the late Mr. Duncan Rutherford won tho double with Alma nnd lCuluinc, both of whom were ridden by the late W. Clarke. In 1913 Mr. P.. Armstrong, who has Sleifrht of Hand and 'Yellow and .Black engaged this ■ iyear, made a big ellort to capture the double with The Spaniard and Jlprning. The former was only just beaten by Bcrcola, while Morning won bis race. A prominent sportsman who saw Coalition race at Treuthani, elves it as his opinion that the Patronua gelding will do a , lot better at Riccarton, where the feucis are EtilTcr and tho goiug likely to be firmer ■ ■• • • ■ > The hurdle gelding Seadown ricked himeelf slightly during the running of the Winter HurdlM at Trentham. Ho has been turned out for a nix moLthu' spell. Collector was going well whtn brought down in tho Wellington Steeplechase, lie looks like one of tho most formidable opponents Master Strowau will have to meet at Rlccarton. It has be«n found necessary to destroy the imp.orted stallion Plavus, who eired winners of about 800 races worth over 100,000 sove. Flavuß was reaching his twenty-third year at the, time of his death. The constitution of the Racing Conferonco will very urpbably bo altered after the war. The object of doing so is to givo etroneer representation to country clubs aud others which havo made such progress as to entitle them to more consideration in the way of voting power than they can hold under existing circumstances.
The Sydney jockey, Mylcs Connell must bo getting cloBO to the 1000 winning mounts ho aspires to before retiring From his profession, At Gharwra Towers ho ado u two wins to his lengthy list through the medium of two old Sylney identities in Clydesido und Nojah. In the North Queenslaud Derby his mount, Persian Gulf, wus third. Tho new telegraph regulations which necessitate Press messages helng in by 9 o'clock in the evening has Induced the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club to alter the hour of closing its acceptances from 8 o'olook to noon. The Auckland Racing Club has made a, change from 9 p.m. to 5 p.m., and it ie almost certain that other racing and trotting clubs of tho Dominion will inako alterations in the same direction A Ghristchurch writer says:—"Some of the horses that arrived from Wellington on Wednesday got a bad bumping in tho tram when on thciv way from Eyttelton to Christchurch. None of them was seriously hurt, but Sleight of Hand sustained a nasty blow across his chest." •The three biggest weights carried to victory in Grand National Hurdles are: -Becorcl Heign. 12st. 121b.. in 1900; Liberator, 12st. 61b., in 1894; and Paisano, 12st. lib., in 1910. I'our horses have carried over 12st. successfully hi the Niitioual Steeplechase, namely, Norton, 12et. 81b., in 1894; Chemist, 12st. 71b. in 1889; Levanter, 12st. 61b., in 1897; and Mutiny, 12st. lib., in 1896 (this being his second win, he having won tho previous year with list. Mb.). Tho biggest weight carried successfully since Vm is list. 91b.. with which Tc Arai successfully negotiated tho course eight years ago. Iu the Winter Cup only four horses have carriod 10st or over into ilret place. Vladimir and Kremlin each carried 10st. 121b. Eiio:essfully in 1903 and 1905 respectively. In 1901 Ostiak won with 10st. 51b. iu the saddle, whilst in 1910 Nvland finished iu flret place with 10st. lib. When Nyland won ho gave A. Oliver liia third winning mount in as many years, Oliver having steered North-East and Penates the two previous years. South Island horses have only won the Winter Cup on ilvo occasions in niuetceu years. Sleight-of-Haml. Yellow and Black, Ecformation, Sir fisher.
