"Speaking to (lie subject the Mayor stated that a meetins of th.o various local bodies concerned had recently been held, and after it very , interesting discussion they hod recommended that the following gentlemen be nominated;— Mr. S. A. Broadbelt (Levin), Mr. Frank Penn (Otaid). and. Mr. Law (Shannon). It had also been suggested that a committee of representatives from the different districts be set up to deal with ■.hospital l matters, particularly the collecting of accounts. "While the names mentioned .seemed to give general satisfaction at thameetirig, the Mayor pointed out that he would not liko to create the impression that the appointments were "cut and dried." It was quite optn tor auyone'to .nominate a candidate. The porkers' Education Association wrote asking far a donation, and pointing out the great, benefits the residents would derive from the association's local branch. The Mayof expressed himself in sympathy with the objects of the association, ivnd said it was, well worthy of support. He moved that the council donate the sum of Tlio motion was copied. A petition was presented from the residents of Tiro Tiro Eoiul asking for gas installation. -During the discussion on the matter'it was mentioned that the cost .of the work would probably run into. .£500.' • It was finally decided, to refer the matter to. the Lighting Committee for; report. The Gas Manager's report on the working of the department for the.month, of June wa? received. During (he month, it 6tated, approximately GSO,OOO cubic feet of gas had .betfji manufactured and distributed, as against '590,000 cubic-feeti for the same perio.l last year: 1 .-There was considerable activity in the. distribution and installation branch -of tho department, and several ' new..- services' were about to be installed. There was a keen demand for coke, and .'a readjustment of prices would he niit before the Lighting Committee shortly. Good stocks of tar were on hand, and' a new storage well 'was in, courso of constructioa; which, when finished, would hold about SOOO gallons; : The report of the Streets Committee recommended tbat the, present footnatli from Devon Street be continued to York Street, and that;a -ift. track -of metal be placed on the footnath between York and. Tyne These iecommendations were amended slightly by the.colincil and then' carried.-" The Fire Brigade Committee applied for the -removal of the telephone froni Mr. M'Taggart's house.to,the house of the first lieutenant of the brigade, Mr. W. B. M'lntoSh.- It also asked that a notice board be placed at tho Wcrnroa, Fire Station' notifying residents, in the event of alarm,, tb call up members of. the brigade residing in that locality. Consideration of the latter suggestion was deferred. . Considerable discussion took place with regard to the advisableness of altering tho present method of joint'control-of the brigade. Councillor Matheson pointed out that the new members were not quite c]ear as to whether it. was necessary for the council's representative to bo present at all committee meetings of tho brigade, or as to who was to preside at such meetings. He thought the chair should' be. taken -by the captain of the brigade, although this had not been done in the past. The Mayor explained that it had -always been tin; custom for the council's- representative to occupy the chair, a7id. be .thought, rightly so." Councillor MacKenzic asked whether it would not be better to allow the brigade to make direct-representation (o the council and do away with representatives. Councillor Broome thought: it would. Councillors Parker,and Aitken (the representatives to the brigade) both spoke at some length on the question, concluding by stating that, as there were now three members of the council on the brigade, tbev considered I heir services as representatives unnecessary, and Iherefore they desired to resign. ' This the Mayor refused to agree to, and the resignations were not accepted.
