CHARGE OF TOHUNGAISM
4 ' PREFERRED AGAINST CHATHAM. ISLAiN'D NATIVES. By Telegraph-Press Association. Christchurch, July 17. Four, natives of the Chatham Islands have been charged with Tohungaism, resulting in the death of another native, a woman, and have been committed for trial at, Christchurch on a chargo of manslaughter. The accused are Hare Piwari, Peter Piwari, Rati Piwari, and t Pitan Panii'au, who were charged he's fore tho Chatham Islands Magistrate's Court on July II with assaulting and. wounding one Eia Horomoiia Rebo so as to cause her death, thereby committing tho crimo of manslaughter. Lengthy evidence was called to the effect that the four accused, with other members of their family, had noted as they did towards tho dcccasod "vvitli a view to gx* pelling an evil spirit, with which she was supposed to bo afflicted. At an ':iqv.est on the body of deceased, held previously, tho jury had found that her <i»ath bad been caused by persons unknown.
