TELEGRAPH COMMUNICATION
1 EAST COAST WIRES WORKING. For (lie first time for a fortnight no notice was exhibited in the Chief Telegraph Office yesterday referring to delayed messages. That must not be interpreted to mean that all the wires have been restored and are working normally, for, as a matter of fact, the situation telegraphically is still quite precarious, though an improvement in communication has been effected by strenuous endeavour under severe conditions. For the past, day or two the two wires via Cheviot and along the coast (in the South Island) have been working with interruptions, due to the wires being suspended on nnv kind of pole or treestump. Until the relief staff arc able to effect permanent repairs these lines cannot be .regarded as steadily dependable. .Yesterday morning the local officii <r o t; comixuvicatinn with Christchurch on theKaikoura-Waiau line, but it was onlv fur five minutes. Then there wns a complete cut-off for the rest of the day. The incident shows, however. Hint fin inmrovemcnf fan be prnttv safely looked for to-day, if the weather bold= fair. Tn the meantime the two West Coast wires are enrrving the load, and have proved invaluable during the past fortnight. . The Tlennrtment is now able to get through the day's work without usine tl>" 1 ferry service, and hope In continue to bo able to do so henceforth. Tn the meantime the public ere requested to use the lines economically.
