WEALTH FROM SEWAGE
. * Jfr. Edmund Kiniber, whose scheme for utilising London's sewage for fertilising and other purposes line been favourably received by the Main Drainage Committee of the London County Council, stated recently that the scheme which ho discussed at the meeting with the committee was offered to the London County Council as far bnck as the early 'eighties, when it was considered by Mr. John Burns, while 10 years previous to then it had been brought forwnrd as a practicable .proposition. "It is estimated that the solid sewage will produco 13 gallons of crude oil per ton, three gallons of light epirit, 451b. of sulphate of ammonia, and 13cwt. of fertiliser. The whole of the present estimated solid matter of 212,800 tons would thereby realise a sum of ,£583.395 per annum. "Treated on scientific, lines, at an initial expenditure of less than ,£200.000 for the entire scheme. I believe that the fertility of the arable la.nd in the six home counties would be increased 100 per cent., with a resultant gain to the food supplies of the Metropolis of one million pounds annually."
