TRENTHAM MEETING
BOH REVE WINS THE STEEPLECHASE,
AFrER A GREAT FINISH. With the racing at Trenlham on Saturday the most successful Winter Meeting yet hold by the Wellington Racing Club was brought to a conclusion. There was ft very largo attendance, and those present witnessed Borne very fine racing. Rarely has such a close finish been witnessed in a jumping event a 8 in the July Steeplechase. His rare condition and breeding stood to Bon Kevo, and after j appearing to be beaten he got up in the last stride amidst a scene of excitement. Horse and rider came in for a round of applause on roturning to weigh in. on this form the place-getters on Saturday and Master Strowan are certain to give a good account of themselves in the Grand National Steeplechase. Thero was only one iiumiry by the Judicial Committee. It. "-■>s rnijiHv!> to some bumping in the big Handioip, but no action was taken. The i, . ..6: i-r t'..ii was kept very busy, ana n't the close of the day the total recorded was £57,657 10s., making £99,960 10s. for (he meeting. A commendable feature of the day's racing was the promptitude with which tho events were got off, and the . last race was run well to time. Secretary A. E. Whyte and his assistant (Mr. John Griffiths) had everything in smooth working order, and the meeting passed off without hitch of any kind. Backers opened disastrously when the-little-fancied Master Boris defeated several well-backed candidates in the Hack Hurdles. Kahuiaangu, Reformation, Delage, and Golden Prince were all evenly backed. At the first fence Parky fell and Golden Prince led Reformation, Delat">. and r.anumangu. Down the back Golden Prince had a, good break, but at tho half-mllp Master Boris milled to the front, and from this point he never looked like getting beaten. Gwynne, Kahumangu, Reformation, Delage, and Undecided were in n bunch at the last fence, but Undecided beat the others in tho run home though ho could not get near Master Boris. Kahuraangu was third, and then came Paraoa, Golden Prince, Reformation, and Delage. . _ The West Coast-owned Tip-Un 6aw a very short price in the Liverpool Handicap, the other runners being comparatively neglected. The fa-sourlto and Sardinia were prominent Into the straight, where Form Up swept along on the outside, and gave a return not usually associated with a horso of his class. Sardinia was three lengths away, and then came Merrie Pcto. Fleetham was fourth. The winner is own-, ed by a Wellington sportsman, who gave 450 guiueas for him in May. This is his ' fourth run for his new owner, who is understood to have made him a cheap horse «s tho result cf Saturday's win. The unlucky Sardinia was again in second place, which has been his position on omte a number of occasions this season. Ormosbv was a very prominent order in tho nack Steeples, and ho duly won, •but if ho was unlucky on the first day he w,ib fortunate on Saturday. He led nearly the whole way with Master Hamilton and Arlington handy, but the southern horso fell at the five furlongs post, leaving the favourite with a big break. Gaekwar ran to the last fence with him, taut appeared to have the measure of the Trenthain horse, but Flynn waß very vigorous at tho finish, and Ormcsby eot the verdict by a neck. Arlington was some distance away. , The Orofton Handicap saw tho triumph of the Aucklander King of the Valley, who was unlucky on the opening day. On Saturday M'Flinn always had him in a good position, and taking charge inslda the distance he won easily from Hastie and Manu. Glucian, who was a good favourite, got left at the poet. Quinn's Post, Classification, and Momac led down tho back, but Justification, was first into the straight. Then Hastie took charge, but King of the Valley waß handy, and won easily. Justification was fourth, ana then came Warmth and Black Hill. Royal Prince finished last. , Thero was a sensational finish in tho July Steeplechase, in which Bon Revo, St. Elmn, and Coalition passed the judge in a. line.- The top weight was a good fayouritc. At tho start Diavolo, Merry Lad, Marton, and Moddite were prominent, with Iho favourite and Zarkonia in the rear. Tho jumping waß perfect over the first round. With a mile to go Diavolo was still in charge, with St. Mmn and Moddite clear of Coalition, and tho favourite moving up. Four furlongs from houio Diavolo fell back, and St. Elmn and Moddite jumped to the front, with (joaliuon and Bon Reve next. At the. ricker fence Moddite gave way and Coalition joined St. Elmn, while Bon Rove came fast on the inside. The two first-uamed rose at the hencoop just in front of Bon Rove, but tho last-named made a Bplendid jump and equalled matters. Onco over, sticks were produced on tho trio, and in a wonderful finish Bon Revo won by a neck, with fat. Elmn a head in front of Coalition. Moddito was fourth. Zarkoma fell. Sir Agneß, with Gray in the 6addlc, waß hacked down to a very short price in the Winter Oats, while there waß plenty of support for Bagdad and Detroit. Prince Dclawaro made the running to tne nailmile, where Treßsida and Multaine shot to the front. Once in tho straight Sir Agnes appeared on the 6ceue, while' Bagdad and Detroit also became prominent. The three-year-old compounded quickly, but Detroit challenged tho favourite, but could make no impression, and Gray's mount won nicely. Kiltess, who got off badly, was third and Bagdad fourth. Considerably over £3000 was investod on the Kembalt bracket in the Final Hurdles, aud the top weights were the hottest favourite of the meeting. Most neoplo relied upon Gladful to win. but thu Birkenhead gelding jumped very badly and'lost ground at every fence. Thrace and Wishful went out in front, but the Aucklander shook Wishful off with five furlongs to go. Gladful thou ran into second place, but he jumped the last two-fences badly, and though he made a great effort in the straight Thrace won by three lengths, fityrax was a poor third. The winners showing was a distinct improvement on that of Wednesday, while Gladful appeared to have lightened up a t_nny. Polydamon jumped well, but he c;>uhl not act in tho mud, and waß tailing the field tho whole way. Thore waß a- big turnover in tho concluding event, and when the machine closed thero was just under £10,000 invested. Royal Park wn.; the favourite, but the betting was very wido. Piano waß first into tho straight, and looked to be winning, but Fleetham and Oron.hu both beat her in tho run home. The English borso, has been in a place several times, but this was his first success. Ouiahu also Improved on his previous form, and ho should turn out a useful horse nest season. The favourite drew the Inside and got, off smartly, but waß not in the picture at tho finish.
