THE COPPER TRAIL
1 . ■ ■ A WEEK'S PROGRESS. • . Auckland advanced seven miles further along the copper trail last week, 'and 'Wollington added four hard-won miles, tho relative positions being:— Auckland, 107 miles;' Wellington, 36 miles; this bringing tho Wellington head of the trail to Waikanao, Some substantial sums have been subscribed during this week, one being for .£IOOO from Messrs. Levin and Co. This fine contribution is the- eloquent testimony of an important New Zealand firm fo the magnitude of the work of the Re(. Cross, and New Zealnnd'6 responsibility lor its share. Red Cross expenditure is counted in millions sterling; hence tho seed for large cheques if this worldwide work of mercy is to be oarried on without parsimony during the fourth year of war. It should be explained that Messrs. Levin and Co.'s cheque helped to extend tho trail total announced a week ago. Tho "dinner Taid" on the Midland Hotel, whioh was so pleasant a function, brought no less than .£3Ol to the funds. The chalet workers took a day off on Friday, so that there should bo no competition against tho Trench Day collectors. This partly accounts for the small advanco of tho trail. Another important element is the fact that although tho country districts have commenced collecting, they have not begun to remit largo amounts. Auckland seems to havo had a good organisation ready for, the trail, but Wellington has to build its organisation up, and this is now almost complete. But tho traillike tho Red Cross expenditure—is of formidable size, and tho workers hopo to 6ee more generous sympathisers whoso means enable them to cover a mile or more in a bound. The smaller gifts, which make so fine a show in the aggregate, continue to make the little chalet opposite Government buildings a busy centra.

Watkins, Hull, Hunt, and Wheeler, include Mr. and Mrs. John Duncan, .£SO; Gear Meat Co., .£SO; William Barton, .£25; Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Atkinson, A. R..Fleming, and A. E. Pearce, caeli ilO 305.; L.
