WATERSIDE ACCIDENTS

Two accidents occurred on the Wellington waterside yesterday. Shortly after i p.m. a man named Adam Mitchell was walking up the gangway oi the steamer Putiki, which was berthed at Jervois Quay, when he slipped and fell into the water. In his fall ho struck oi,ther the side of tho ship or tho stringers of the wharf, for he was rendered 'unconscious and was nearly drownedA wharf worker, named Eobert Wilson, ivas stnuding near by at tho time, and when ho saw llitchell slip he made an effort to save him, but only managed to oatcb hold of his cap. As soon as the Mann was raised Peter Ivveyl, a watersider, was lowered down from the wharf by a rope, and recovered Mitchell from the water. The man was earned into one of tho Harbour Board slicus, and it was not until artificial respiratory methods had been carried out for about three-quarters of an hour that Mitchell showed signs of animation. Dr Calull, who was summoned, found that the man was suffering from sjiock, and ordered his removal to the Hospital, whither he was conveyed in tho Harbour Board ambulance. Mitchell is a single man, 47 years of age, and is a gardener by occupation, residing, at Okawa. Yesterday lie had been in the city with his brother David Mitchell, who is chief engineer on the Putiki, and it was when he two were returning to the vessel that the mishap took place. The second accident happened at C.1.) p.m. on the collier Poherua, moored lit the Railway Wharf. A waterside worker named Thomas Pearce was working in the hold of the ship, and he was struct on the knee-cap of the right leg by a coal-basket which was being lowered. Ih« impact was a severe one, for a small piece of bone was chipped out of the knee-cap. Dr. I'ylte attended to tlio man, who was'removed to the Hospital in the Harbour Board ambulance. Pearce is married nnd lives at 75 Aio Street.
