APPEAL FOR ROADS
A KING COUNTRY DEPUTATION. An appeal for assistance in the making . and improvement of roads in the Taumarunui and Waimarino was made by a deputation representing those districts which waited on the Minister of Public Works ■ (Sir William Praser) and the Minister of Justice (the Hon. T. M. AViL lord) yesterday. The depuration was sup. ported by the members for the districts, Mr. W. T. Jennings and .Mr. R. W. Smith. The requests were for the improvement of certain lengths of arterial • roads, and for other works of a. like ' character. One of the proposals was that • prison labour should be used for the ■ work, and it was to answer this demand ' that the Minister of Justice was present. Mr. Wilfor.d said that the Prisons Do- ' partnicnt would be wilting to complete > the Roto-airi road, Waimarino, if tiie ' Public Works 'Department wouid grant [ the money. Sir William I'raser said that he could not promise grants for new works at. present, but he would do his best to help with tlie keeping up of existing works, lie advised that the people interested 1 should consult with the district en gineers, who would report to the Minister, with a view to. making provision on f tho Estimates for any necessary new works for which money might be avail- ' able. Mr. A. S. Laird, Mayor of iauniarunui. said that the settlers had been led " with promises for four years, ami they " did hope for noro solid fare.
