NEW UNIFORMS FOR MERCHANT MARINE
STANDARD TYPE RECOMMENDED.. ( A national standard uniform for the ( mercantile marine is recommended by the committee which was appointed to, advise the Board of Trade. It is its ' opinion that Hie uniform suggested will ' tend to the increased unity and status ' of officers iu the merchant service. ' The cap is to be of blue cloth, with a cover of whito ribbed marcella. Tho ' badgo is oval shaped on a dark blue J background, with a centre medallion en- : closing nn anchor. Oak leaves in rojd ' surround the medallion, which is surmounted by a naval crown. The Kins, c it is suggested, should be asked to sane- c lion tho nnval crown for tho exclusive F use of the mercantile marine, as tho Ad- e lr-iralty are willinc to transfer its use n to them. Tho uniform is to be limited strictly 6 to hollors of Board of Trade certificates c (deck or engineer), and to surgeons, purs- l> ers, and cadets (or apprentices), as well as unecrtificated- junior officers Qualifying g for a first certificate. j] Tho committee proposes to consider h uniforms for boatswains, carpenters, v, stewards, and other rat- i; ings, and to issue a supplementary report. f
