Patriotic Dance in the Town Hall. Very successful was tho patriolie, dance which was held in the Town Hull last evening by Miss Borlase, with llio assistance of a very capable committee. Fancy dress was worn by tho majority of those present, and as they chiefly represented flowers, butterflies, vegetables, or anything connected with a garden, tho effect was vory gay, and altogether charming. The big chamber had been most -effectively decorated for the occasion with Hags, foliiigo. and flowers, and tho stage wits Jjnnked with masses of wattle- flanked with a trellis work covered with artificial flowers. Hero Cowley's orchestra was stationed, and their mimic for the dancing was delightful. A great many of the dresses- worn were very cleverly contrived of crinkled paper, anil a great amount of ingenuity hod been displayed in making tho most of that useful but extremely fragile material. Sunfloworfi and poppies were favourites, and it was rather interesting to see the. different ways in which the dresses (representing tho siime flower) were carried out. Quito uncommon and very successful was a cauliflower, and another interesting representation wna an orange. Snowllakc-s, carnations, a brier-rose, a thistle, a convolvulus, buttercups, roses, a bumble-bee, an acorn, : a periwinkle, violets, daffodils, etc., were to be seen in more or less, close approximation fo Nature.
Two prizes wore offered i'or tho best costumes, and were awarded (0 Hiss ,Toim Tully (1), who represented ;i nasturtium, and Miss V. Staplee (2), a butterfly. Th-3 judges wero Mrs. Hall-Thomp-son, Mrs.. Tooifood,' iind Mrs. C'hafh'eld.
