Owing to ihc lack or tonnage the coal, trade- continues intermittent, says the June report, of Messrs. Earp Bros, and Co., Sydney. There is a good demand from Interstate and Dominion ports, but orders cannot, be cxccutcd in full until the shipping positiou improves. The shortage of coal at- conFUining centrcs, cspccuuly Aqw Zealand, is at present very acnte. and more steamers have been rcciuiaitioncd for the latter trade.- A feature in connection with the port is the exccedinßly promnt dispatch of Interstate colliers, on occasions no fewer than four of the movable cranes j in the basin being employed' at the one 1 time in the loading of a vessel. Work at. ! the collieries, in sympathy with the shortage of shipping is of a more or less intcrraitt.cn nature. Freight^rates continue normal, there being practically no freo tonnage available for cithor intercolonial. or forcigu trade. ZING ABA ARKIYES. The Breeze, after loading at Lyttelton on Friday, will call at Wellington on ' Saturday to load for Wanganui. The Glaucus, which is loading timber, will sail at 3 p.m. to-morrow for Melbourne direct. "Syren and Shipping" says that considerable disappointment is expressed in shipping circles that the men of the mer- : chant service are not, like the officers and men on the Royal Navy and its auxiii; forces, granted chevrons for war servioe. Why men serving on Admiralty vessels should not be granted the honour am. those who have incurred equal, if not greater risk and done. equally valuable national work, be left out in the cold, it is hard to conceive. Such exclusion does not tally with officialdom's laudation of the gallantry of the men of the mercantile marine. The Government. Jias toU' us repeatedly that, tho Royal Navy and the merchant service are brothers in brayo devotion to duty, and that each is necessary to. the.other, and both to. the safety of tho" nation. Why; then, this . lamentable failure to recognise these si-'--vices? Recognition for torpedoed men would have been better than nothir • Such callous differentiation must- be remedied, and that without further delay. Tho publip must insist that our. sailor heroes are treated with the respect .which is their due. Mr. .I'. B. Cooke, a former purser on the Union Company's island 6teamers. has taken up an important position., on a special service steamer. Mr. Cooke came ' ashore some years ago,- and- was attached to the Uiiiou Company's Auckland and Wellington offlco. staffs hoforo going to Dunedin to take up his present position. .Mr. E.~ Gilling, late of the Maori, has' Figned on the itoana as third officer. His place is being taken by Mr. Kelsey,' who was on the. Waihemo when that.- vessel was torpedoed. To discharge the Wellington portion of her Melbourne cargo the Union-Steam Shin Company's Kaiapoi left Dunedin last night direct for Wellington. She will arrive tomorrow morning. On finishing discharge the vessel will sail {or. Lyttelton and Timaru to. load for Auckland. Tho Kokiri arrived during the night from Westport and from tlfat port the colliers l'oherua and. Kouiata were to have left last night. Delay in arriving a.t Napier has caused the Rosamond's departure for the south to be put forward, to to-day. The vessel will call here for bunker co'al to-morrow. Tho Nobel Explosive Company's schooner Hnia arrived at Auckland -from Wellington on Saturday morning, and anchored at Maraetal to- discharge her explosives. The trip occupied seven days, The. four-masted barquentino Lyman D. Poster, which arrived at Auckland from San Francisco on Friday night, left San Franoisco on April 14, and was teithiu 95 miles of Cape Brett on June 13, after which she met-with a succession' of strong westerly, gales that drove her out of her course. After discharge she- is to fto to Suva and load another cargo of copra for San Francisco. " ... Tho H.M; steamer Niagara, which; left Auckland for J r ancouvor early on Monday, July 1. arrived at Suva at 2 a,;m. on. Thursday, and left shortly, after, in. continuation of her voyago;, At a preliminary examination of the damage sustained, by the steamer Makambo, which stranded at Lord Howe Island, it was tsual that the machinery is out of line, the bottom plates, on both sides are corrugated from end to end. Jkcel plate bent in. two places, stern post Brightly bent, plates, round stern post very badly shaken, and rivets loose. It is anticipated that the Makambo will bo cut of commission for two months. Ncwb received in Sydney from Seattle, dated May. 18, states that a vessel arriving there reportß having passed a_ threemuster sailing vessel abandoned in lat. 37 north, long. 175 west. The. vessel. waß probably a Bchooner of 500 tona registor. 150 feet long, and was awash, bottom bright, apparently copper. No sign of life was seen. A sharp look-put for lifeboats was kept, but no trace of any was seen. Private advices .recently to hand in 6yd: ncy state that the American schooner Annie Larson was wrecked on Fanning. Island, while en route from San Francisco to -Papeete (Tahiti). Tho. Annie Larson Bailed from Hilo on May. 23 for the hitian port with timber, and was engaged to load copra there, for San Francisco. She was a wooden tlireo-masted schooner of 377 tons gross and 326 tons net. She was built ■ by "Messrs. Hall Bros., at Port Blakeley,, in 1681, and was owned by Messrs. Olsen and Maho-iey.. Her dimensions were:—. Length, 143 ft. Bin.;.boam, 34ft. 6in.: depth, ' lift. - '■ -
