i THORNDON CLUB J 1 1 Colonel R, ,T. Collins, C.M.G. (prcsi- J (lent), occupied the chair at the annual meeting of tho Thorndoji Bowling Club held in the club's pavilion last evening. In moving tlio adoption of tho annual report, Colonel Collins said that tho , balance-sheet, in view of war conditions, , must lie considered satisfactory. Iho , fall in the revenue w.ss accounted for j by the decrease in tho amount donated ( to tho building fund and tho increase in _ the cost of materials. Last year they had • only icceived *£100 rent for the croquet lawn, but this year they had received JCI37 10s., which had cuabled them to pay the interest. There was a new item : of' Is. 9d. laud tax, worthy of note 1 because it was tho first occasion on which the item had appeared on their books. Tho club , should congratulate itself on the condition of its green, which was one of the best in Wellington. During tho season the club had contributed JESO ,to patriotic funds. They must keep that 'up, and he was glad to say that the amount they had subscribed was only second to ouo other club, and that was the mother club. • During tho coming year some of the younger men—members of the Second Division—would probably liavo to go away and fight for them. Thev wished them the best of luck, and would always be glad ,to welcome them back safo and sound. Ho hoped that whon they met next year the war would be over. • In criticising the balance-sheet, Mr. Gamble said that a credit of was , shown, ■ but against that there was .£125 owing to some twentyfive members, and it seemed to him that the club was living to some "extent on loans from a few members. Ho hoped that the incoming committee would keep e. careful eye on expenditure, as he saw that more had been spent on labour than in previous years. Mr. T. S. Ronaldson paid that they hail at all risks to keep up the condition of their green, even if it came out of capital cost. He pointed out that ■ the salvation of the club from a financial point of view was the sale of the ! lower green. That would place the club ' on a sound financial basis. I Mr. Upham said that it was imposi sible to curtail the expenses on the upkeep of the green. The success of the ■ club depended on the condition of the : green. Ha knew that as an old member 1 of the green, for when their green was J in a bad way members had left and r others had threatened to leave. It was . only by keeping up the green to a cerI tain standard that they could keep their members. : The report and balance-sheet wero [ adopted. The following officers were ejected for \ the ensuing year President, Colonel E. i J. Collins, C.M.G.; vice-president, Mr. i D. Munro; directors, Messrs, V. Dimock, • F. C. Hatch, G. T. Mason, A. V. Allan, J and D. T. Wilson; secretary, Mr._ V. , Brogan; treasurer, Mr. C. K- Chitty; ' auditor, Mr. George .Tohnson; delegate 1 to the centre, Mr. V. Dimock. a ~Mr. Dimock, as the club's delegate to f the centre, gavo a resume of tho business '• of the centre. Ho traversed the change ? in the 6ystem of playing tho Pennants, ® which he maintained had been a success, ». and also gavo details of the large amount e collected for patriotic purposes during i the year. He pointed out that during e the year the club had installed billiardL- tables, which had been a distinct source of revenue. He mentioned the results , s of that enterprise at the Victoria and ' 0 Newtown Clubs, throwing out the suggesu tion that the Thorndon Club might im- !-• prove its revenue by establishing a bill- Hard-table. Mr: Dimock also traversed b Mr. R. W. Shallcrass's ideas on tho j; matter of co-operation in the manage- , mcnt of greens. j , Mr. Shallcrass said it was a matter n for tho clubs at present lo approve only o the principle of co-operation. Having c gone that far the clubs who approved >' would appoint delegates to consider a 8 - practical scheme, when ,it would be sul>milted again to the clubs. Mr. Sliallj. crass formally moved that the principle of co-operation be approved, and that Mr. Dimock bs the club's delegalo to the . conference. The motion was carried with one dis- .). sentient. JOHNSONVILLE CLUB. Tho annual report of the Johnsonvillo Bowling Club states that owing to the limited number of members the directors did not deem it necessary to have Ihe whole of the green prepared for play last season. Material assistance was ofia forded the club by tho admission of the r3 members of tho New Zealand Army Ord,n nance Bowling Club. The champion :r singles was won by Mr. V. A. Mills, who •o was "runner up" in tho final in the ■ n champion contest, and the champion 'P pairs by Messrs Jacobs and Pcirie. Mr. it, V. A. Mills was also successful ijj win[y ning the sealed handicap tournament, n for which a trophy was presented by id the president, Mr. Robert Turner. The ' a annual match played with Otaki was won y by Johnsonville. The number of memhers at tho close of the year was 28, ;r which with that of the New Zealand *1, Army Ordnance Club brought the total is to 42. a •
