TO-DAY'S RACES
THE CARD REVIEWED. ["By gmxcok.i 1 Good steeplechase going will be the order I of' things at Trentliam to-day. Though . the. Railway Department has again failed , to supply iiiythjng but a skeleton service ' the crowd gun be expected to roll up in ' big numbers. The fields are on the largo ' side and the racing should be lull of i interest. The bis Steeplechase is regarded as most open, aud it is difficult to forecast the favourite. Collector was much inquired for yesterday as the result of good work out on tho flat with Sir Fisher. The steeplechaser appeared to 1 have the best of tho pailop. , The first event is the Hack Hurdles, j which is timed lo start at 11.30 a.m. Sea- . down will be kept for the bie event, and Reformation is also spoken of aB an unliltoly starter. Kahumangu shaped so well at Nupior that in a- weak field to-day ' the black gelding may go out) favourite. ' Southerners speak highly of Giralda, and j ho is sure to be well liked. Form Up will bo scratched in the Stewards' Handicap, but three very useful sprinters in Hyginas, Hydros, and Millf taine are to take their placcs in the field. I The two former have shown winning form i latelv, and Multainc ran two Eootl races ; at Hastings. Tho top weight acts well in j heavy going, and lie should show up welL l They ar» not a good lot in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase, but the list 3 contains some fine jumpers. Tho lop 0 weight Arlington raced prominently in e open company at Wanganui. and he scored in hack class at Otaki. He iB a very safo « conveyance, but has a big weight. Master Hamilton is a new-comer at the business, but ho schools well and looks like getting " round safely. Tauira has not had a race 1- for some months, but Advancer won a y double at Gisborne. Of tli,c others Ormesby 1 reads the best. Ho schooled with some |i of the first-raters this week, and shaped „ as well as them. He knows the course B well, and his perfect lepping will materie ally assist liim. , ' t In previous years the Trial Plate was 0 regulai ly won by a representative, t There is no Ormond-owned representative j engaged to-morrow, but the late Karamu trainer, S. Waddell. lias Mandrake enl" gaged. This is a- two-year-old by Hymct--0 tils from Mandota, and Napier track Q watchers havo a good word for him. t Oourtficld, Risinghain, Pot Pourri, and ir Matatua are locally-trained two-year-olds. v and the laßt-mentioned has .been shaping 3 well in his work. Of the elder division j. the imported Fieetham has some form to recommend him, but at this time of the 2- vear the youngsters havo all the beßt of ;• matters, aB they'are nearly three-year-olds, s. but they lyive a concession of a stone. ~1 The following are the probable starters and their ridors in the Wellington Steeplel«" chase:— !„ Waimai, 12st. 81b (F. Flymi). c ? Master Strowan, 12st, 51b. (R. M'Seveney). lfc Bon Reve, list, 121b. (Stan. _ r- Sleight-of-Hand, list. 111b. (A. M'Donald). :o Crib, list. 111b. (11. Lorrigan). h Collector, list. 51b. (J. Deerey). • Coalition, lOst. lllb. (U. M'Sweeney). Zarkoma, lOst. .Mb. (W. Robinson). 11 St. Elmn, 9st. lllb. (11. Thompson). 11 Moddite, 9st. lllb. (llort Rac). v. Kite, 9st. 101b. (J. R. Kaan). Merry Lad, 9st. 101b. (F. Tutchen). 5 Vascular, 9st. 91b. (F. Ellis). Diavolo, 9st. 71b. (IV. M'Kinnon). jr. Waimai liaß been working well since his ",f arrival at Trentliam, and his admirers claim that ho is now a better horse than 16 when he won the Great Northern. Master s - Strowan has nothing but good form to recommend him. and the contest between this pair should be alone worth the trip to Trentliam. The Foxton horse is a wonderful stayer, and will be going on at tho end no matter how fast the early pace Is. Ron Reve has a chance with Ilia pace and staying ability. feleight-crf-Hanrt is the most-talkcd-about horse. This is his first race over big fenceß, and in heavy going ho has not iu Hie past showed up, but he iB a better horse this year than previously, and on looks he and Master I Strowan stand out. He has schooled well, o- and shows no disposition to rush at his rn fences. Such a racehorse must have a 5 big chancc. Crib has not had a race for i nearly twelve months, and can be left out of calculations. Collector is a big eleventh P" hour order, and in his favour it can be e- said that ho is a perfect jumper. Coalirs tion is another great jumper, and IB good Hi in heavy going. Zarkoma and Moddito „ will each have a large following, but the • top weights seem to bo a better class, " l Those who remember the way Master l 1" Strowan - sprinted past the field in the ii' Grandstand Steeplechase at W aneauui are not likely to neglect him t°-"iay. V" that occasion he earned 12st. 61b. in ip heavy going and won very easily. , The field for the Parliamentary Handi- ?" cap will be as follows ? Form Up, lOst. 61b. (R. Hatch). Dt Orleans, lOst, 41b. (Bid. llcidl. Polydamon, lOst. 31b. (W. Ryan), ir Iceberg, lOst. lib. (H. Robinson). Gold Soult, lOst. (C.Price), it Tressida, 9st. lllb. G. Clarke). 3 White Blaze, 9st. 91b. (H. Gray). Prince Delaware, 9st. 21b. (U. Reed). b- Detroit, 9st. 21b. (11. Young). r0 Bagdad, 9st (F. Ellis). 16 Sir Agnes, 9st. (I>. Hegarty). us Rumania, 9st. (C. Euieysou). Hastie, 9st, (W. Robinfeon). Persian Prince, 9st. (A. Reed). in Form Up, the top weight, lias no credentials over a distance. Orleans has « stone more than he scored with last year, but he has none the worst of the weights, r Polydamon is too true ft mover lo act {V well in heavy going, and White Blaze, the " earlv favourite, also shaped badly in the G going yesterday. Detroit is a likely horse as his light weight will serve him well. He, Bagdad, and Iceberg all shape p well in heavy going. . n Art, the top weight, in the Winter 1 Ilurdcs, does not usually act well in heavy s .° going, and his trainer may nut run lnni to-day. Sir Fisher may be the favourite, es hut it must be borne in mind that lie has of a. big weight in heavy ground, and move:'U over lie is only a littlc'fellow. Pui'selillei' r a is giving her trainer trouble, but Gladful iB a greatly-improved horse, and since his Y; failure at Hastings his trainer has wisely done plenty of jumping with him. He ll " may be the hardest to beat amongst the top weights. His Btablc companion Wishful is also to take his place in the field,
Naupata can bo depended upon to runit out, and bo can Scadown and Thrace, both ol whom have nico rufving wcl^fi 6 " Mo biggest field of tho day will contcst the concluding event. The favourite;! may bo Quinn's Post, Whiro, and Jtoya Park. The last-named shaped well when lie won at Napier.
