DRESS REFORM FOR WOMEN
A correspondent is responsible for the I following suggestion iu regard, io a re-1 form of women's attire:—"fhis war is | teaching us many les?ons from timo to I time, and we shall surely fail to learn I one of the most important of them if we allow the great need for economy to pass by unobserved. This being po, surely a few suggestions under the above headin? will not be altogether out: of place. But before making these suggestions, let us say emphatically that our aim is to raise the moral tone and not to lower it, for we know only too well that the low moral tone at present prevailing is a standing blot on our boasted civilisation. Now, it is, wo think, an admitted fact that women, generally speaking, spend too much Wney on clothes, nnd u seems to us tliat this wrong state of affairs might in some measure be lessened by the adoption of a more, practical style of attire, say, knee breeches, leggings, and a long sac coat, to bo worn as a uniform during the war period, the uniform idea acting as a. guard against all needless extravagance. Wc feci convinced that the introduction of so sorely needed a reformation would not only be the means of sowing the seeds of economy, but would in time raise the moral tone. If once the idea would commend itselt to women who are in possession of an assured social position, the example might soon be set, and quickly followed, to our lasting benelit and advantage—l am, etc., Moralist."
