BUTTER AND CHEESE
ACCOMMODATION AT lA'TTELTON. The secretary of tho South Tsland Dairy Association has asked the Lyttelton Harbour Board to consider a' proposal to increase the board's accommodation at its cool stores in Lyttclton to take GOOO additional boxes of butter and 5000 additional crates of cheese. TJie. as- • fiociation offered to pay half tho cost of ' the extension. When the proposal • c'amo before the board the engineer reported that there ■was accommodation at present for 17,000 boxes of Witter and 6500.crates of cheese. As far as conk! lie estimated without the preparation of working drawings, tho extensions would cost, at least ,£7OOO. He did not favour the proposal, for the following reasons: (1) The site of the stores did not lend itself to convenient extension, and tho inevitable -extension nt the western end of the present building would partially obstruct the view for shunting on to No. 7 jetty. (2) The freezing power was only sufficient for tho board's present rooms, with such margin ns was necessary for safety and economy. (3) The extension westward could not be properly served with railway siding accommodation. As to the extension just l completed, those difficulties did not apply, and tho present arrangement with the association, which paid part of the cost, enabled the board to duplicate tho cooling plant oh favourable terms, so • that he recommended its being carried out. It was decided'to Tefer tho question to . the Harbour Improvement Committeo ■ for a report. >■ .
