A cable message from Washington announces that: Senator Benjamin Byan Tillman, chairman of •the Senate Naval Committee, is dead, of paralysis. Senator Tillman was born in 1317. He was a farmer by profession till he was elected Governor of South Carolina in 1890 and 18K. _ In 1805 he was elected to the Senate, in which he sat for four terms. His greatest efforts were in the direction of

encouraging education, especially along technical lines.

Mr. William It. Adams, aged 73 years, died at his'home near I'apatowai, Otago, last week. Mr. Adams was born and rearcd in Devonshire, coming (o the Dominion in his youth.' While at Kakanui he married Miss Dunlop, and Rome I' 2 years later he took up a bush farm in tho Tahakopa Valley, and resided there for over 2? years.
