Complaints have been made in New Zealand jegarding alleged excessive freights charged by an Australian ahipniug company lor the transport of certain classes of produce. Since lack of shipping caused a congestion of cargo, representatives of Australian shipping company in New Zealand (says the "Argus") were rather disposed to shut- out any cargo over and above that measuring the basic 40 cubic feet to tho ton. Thiß practice gave rise lo many complaints, and it was decided that all shippers should be placed on an equal footing. With this object a charge of 275. 6d. per ton of basic measurement was fixed, and iu tlie case ol' cargo consignments having a greater cubical measurement it was arranged that a proportionate freight rate should be adopted. A representative of New Zealand trading interests has expressed hiß approval of such a system. purine the. month of .Time 158 vessels, witli a total net tounage of 81,136 tons, entered the port of Lyttelton. as compared with 156 vessels, aggrecating 97,870 tons, during the month of June. 1917. a.
