AWAPUNI CAMP

"NOTHING TO BE DESIRED." Awapuni Camp, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Gabites, was inspected on June 28, 1918, by an expert. He ' reports as follows"This camp, > liko lrciitham and Peatherston, leaves, nothing to be desired. It is admirably ran. New Zealand can hold her owii as far as camps are concerned with anycountry in the world.. It speaks. , volumes when it can honestly Ik stated that practically none of these camps have a serious case of illness, when ouo knows that in all previous wars illness claimed up to or over SO per cent. Now in tins war, which started close on four jeais ago, the illness has been reduced ' from the above high percentage to about * per cent., so one can realiso what tlia camp medical officers have done lo pro-. tect our soldiers. -New Zealand can now honestly state that she has kept well abreast. Great credit is undoubtedlv due to Surgeon-General Henderson, abl'v backctl up by his officers. Awapuni Camp is well worth a visit. The orchestra is tip-top. and the marching and playing of the Highland Pipe Band once seen and heard can never be' forgotten,If one has the luck to see an inspection lor the prize for the best best-dressed 6oldier he will see a /sight ho will never forget. Of course, to an outsider this may appear useless, but the real object is to turn out soldiers clean and smart, and to raise a spirit of competition amongst all the remainder, who I can assure the public not in the know are Keen and interested spectators. Awapuni Camp is very fortunate in having such an officcr commanding as it at present possesses."
