MILLIONS WASTED

Tho report of the Select Committeo on Public Expenditure reveals tho useless expenditure of nearly four millions sterling upon tho public shipyards. Tho Admiralty embarked on the scheme without any estimate of tho cost. It was finally decided to establish thirty-four berths, at an averago cost of .£120,000 each, exclusive of tho cost of land. Only a' few berths were yet completed, though four milliou iiad bcw. spent. It was now found impossible to employ military labour or prisoners for the construction of ships as contemplated.
